Senior High School Entrance Exam May Reform

It is learned from relevant department that Ningbo Senior High School Entrance Examination may have great reforms by introducing “Man-Machine Dialogue Testing of English Listening and Speaking Abilities”, which means Spoken English will be added into English Examination.
According to responsible persons from Ningbo Education Examinations Authority, it is an irresistible trend to introduce “Man-Machine Dialogue Testing of English Listening and Speaking Abilities”. But it hasn’t been decided on which exact year the reform will be carried out.
Man-Machine Dialogue relies on computers and internet technology to perform and manage examination. To make it simple, present examinations require students to read the test papers and then mark the answer in answer sheets. However, students only need to read test papers in computer and answer questions by using the mouse and keyboard after implementing the Man-Machine Dialogue Examination.
Currently, listening test is done with the written exam in Ningbo. In future, the speaking exam will be tested alone.
“Spoken English has always been a neglected part in English education so that students’ speaking ability is weakened. To change this situation, we must take the first step to reform English education.” a responsible person from Ningbo Education Examinations Authority said. Many cities in China have already carried out this Man-Machine Dialogue Examination.
From Wenzhou’s experience, adding speaking test into Senior High School Entrance Examination can effectively improve students’ listening and speaking abilities.
In addition, Man-Machine Dialogue can reduce students’ emotional fluctuation, safeguard examination privacy and improve work efficiency by testing a large number of students in the same time.
At present, Ningbo is carrying out research work on “Man-Machine Dialogue Testing of English Listening and Speaking Abilities”. Junior high schools in Jiangdong District have tried out this experiment, laying a solid foundation for later work.
