Ningbo releases its “nature notes” on biodiversity conservation

Ningbo has been devoted to biodiversity conservation. As of today, 51 of the 2183 species of wild plants in Ningbo and 79 of the 546 species of wild terrestrial vertebrates were listed as national priorities for protection, according to the authority.

"Protecting wildlife resources is the only way to leave a biological treasure trove for future generations," the relevant person in charge said that Ningbo boasted an exceptionally favorable natural environment, nurturing rich and unique biological and natural ecosystems. In recent years, the city has been studying Xi Jinping's thoughts on ecological civilization, integrating the construction of ecological civilization into the overall process of economic and social development, and vigorously implementing major projects for biodiversity conservation. Biodiversity conservation has become a bright name card of Ningbo.

According to the city's "nature notes" on biodiversity conservation, the city enjoys 6,650,100 mu of forest area, with a forest coverage rate of about 48%, and a wide variety of plants, including 2,183 species of wild plants, 51 species of them under state protection. That covers four species under the first-grade state protection: Chinese leeks,

southern red bean fir, silver witch hazel, and elephant-nosed orchid; money pine and other 46 species under second grade. There are 546 species of terrestrial vertebrates in the city, and 79 species of them are under national protection. Sixteen of them are protected at the first-grade state level, including the clouded leopard, black muntjac, black stork, white-necked long-tailed pheasant, black-faced spoonbill, Zhenhai spiny newt, and Chinese crested tern; 63 of them are at the second-grade level, including pangolin, river muntjac, mandarin ducks and spoonbills. In terms of marine life, the city is home to 440 species of fish, 121 species of shrimp, and 240 species of crab.

To protect and save rare wildlife, the city has established relevant protected areas and carried out systematic scientific protection and research. The artificial breeding of nearly 1,000 Zhenhai salamanders has kept the wild population of this species stable. The number of Chinese crested terns in Ningbo is now close to 150, once numbering less than 50 worldwide. In the new round of biodiversity surveys and assessments this year, the city has found new species in Zhejiang, including the house crow and the Weighing Hammer tree, which is a national second-grade protected wild plant.

The city has established various types of nature reserves at all levels, delineated and strictly managed ecological and environmental space, leaving enough room for diverse organisms to survive. So far, 28 nature reserves have been established at or above the provincial level, and 3,139.40 square kilometers of marine ecological protection red line has been designated, accounting for 37.6% of the total sea area; 1,670.4 square kilometers of land ecological protection red line has been designated, accounting for 17.1% of the city's land area.

It is reported that at the COP15 conference, the fruits of Ningbo, mainly focused on marine lives, were in the showcase during the whole achievement display of biodiversity conservation in Zhejiang Province
